What actually happens when you call
The reason most people never call is a picture in their head of what the call is. In practice: someone answers, asks what has been going on, and listens. Nobody is contacted. No money is discussed. There is no lecture, no diagnosis, and no obligation at the end. If you want a route into treatment they will tell you what exists near you and often refer you directly; if you want to say the number out loud to another human being once, that is also a complete and legitimate use of the call.
You do not have to have hit a bottom, lost a house, or decided anything. "I think I have a problem and I do not know what to do" is a normal opening sentence and it is the one they hear most. Most of these services also support family members — you can call about someone else, and you can call before they are ready to.
If talking is the barrier rather than the topic, most of them run text and live-chat as well. The US helpline takes calls, texts and chat around the clock; Gambling Therapy is entirely written and multilingual.

Support for families and partners
Living with someone else's gambling is its own problem and it has its own free support. Gam-Anon runs groups specifically for partners and family members, independently of the gambler's recovery. All of the national helplines above take calls from family members, and several run dedicated family services — you do not need the person who is gambling to agree, or to know.
Two things worth hearing early: you did not cause it, and you cannot manage it on their behalf. Protecting your own finances — separate account, checking what is in joint names, a look at your credit file — is not an act of disloyalty. This guide has a section written for the person who was just told.
What treatment actually looks like
Gambling disorder is a recognised clinical condition and it is treatable. The strongest evidence base is for cognitive behavioural therapy and related structured approaches, usually delivered over a fixed number of sessions, individually or in a group. In several countries — the UK, Ireland, Australia among them — specialist gambling treatment is free at the point of use, funded by the state or by charity, and a helpline is the fastest route in. Residential programmes exist for the most severe cases.
Peer support runs alongside rather than instead: Gamblers Anonymous, Gambling Therapy groups, and helpline-run groups. A great many people use a helpline, a therapist and a peer group at once, and the combination outperforms any of them alone. None of it is a comment on how bad your situation is; it is just what the effective version looks like.
Do the practical layer at the same time rather than afterwards: self-exclusion and blocks so the account is closed while you wait for an appointment, and free regulated debt advice if money is the pressing part.
Where Gamblr sits in this list
Underneath all of it. Gamblr is a $4.99-a-week iPhone app and it is not on this page as an alternative to anything above — the helplines are free, staffed by trained humans, and available at 4am, and no app competes with that. Gamblr is a daily support tool for the gaps between: a craving SOS button, a money-saved counter, a clean-day streak, an urge log, and a dated Quit Certificate on the day you stop needing it.
If you have to choose between paying for Gamblr and calling a free helpline, call the helpline. That is not modesty — the app is built to be uninstalled, and the fastest route to uninstalling it is professional help.
